The Pirelli World Challenge championship is Lime Rock Park’s season-opening feature on Memorial Day weekend, Lime Rock’s 60th year; its first races were held April 28, 1957.
For the second consecutive year the full complement of PWC classes are at Lime Rock: GT, GTS, GT Cup, plus the three Touring Car classes – TC, TCA and TCB.
Lime Rock fans will see eight PWC races, including two *SprintX races in the GT classes.
The GT class is where the world’s best FIA GT3 racing machines go fender to fender in races that are one hour or less. Entrants include Cadillac ATS-V.R, Mercedes AMG GT3, the all-new Acura NSX, Chevy Camaro GT3, Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3, Audi R8, Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo and Gallardo, Ferrari 488 and 458 Evo, McLaren 650s, Porsche 911 GT3-R, Aston Martin Vantage, Bentley Continental GT3 and others.
The GTS division features many of the same carmakers as in GT, but the cars are race-prepped at the more affordable FIA GT4 level. Besides the McLaren 570s, Porsche Cayman GT4, Maserati GT4, BMW M3 and Chevy Camaro GT4, low-production street specials from KTM, Ginetta, SIN and Panoz also join the battle.
The Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car (TC) class includes the Nissan 370Z, Mazda MX-5 Miata, Honda Accord V6 Coupe, Audi RS 3 LMS, Ford Mustang V6, BMW M235iR, VW GTI, Genesis Coupe, Porsche Cayman and Lotus Exige. TCA is Mazda MX-5 Cup, Honda Civic, Mini Cooper JCW, Scion FR-S and Kia Forte Koup. In TCB, the machines are Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio 5, Mini Cooper, Mazda 2 and Honda Fit.
*PWC SprintX is a hybrid of the two types of GT competition; there are short GT races – an hour or less, with one driver – and endurance GT races, which are two hours or longer and involve two or more drivers per car. PWC’s hybrid SprintX races are 60 minutes long, but with a mandatory driver swap starting at 25 minutes into the race. Which means all the teams have to hire a second driver for the SprintX races, “hired gun” GT racers from different series all around the world joining the regular PWC drivers.
