What it is...

Driving their own vehicles on a 1/2-mile, 9-turn autocross, the Lime Rock Street Driving Safety Clinic is for street drivers of all ages and experience levels that want to be trained to better control their car or SUV, especially in emergency situations and inclement weather. The Clinic is especially appropriate for new and/or teen drivers.

After being taught the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics and tire-traction management in the classroom, the curriculum’s focus is on repetitively practicing the skills and techniques of emergency avoidance and skid control on the autocross, designed specifically as a controlled-environment training facility.

Multiple professional coaches and instructors – experts in the teaching of the advanced car control skills street and highway drivers need to have to be the safest, most aware and most prepared possible – are employed to provide an instructor-to-student ratio at 4:1 or less.

“The Street Driving Safety Clinic came about partly as a result of the feedback we had gotten from some drivers who had enrolled in our Winter Autocross Days,” says Ryan McIntosh, Lime Rock’s autocross manager. “They were there to practice ‘saving’ skids, slides and panic braking – exactly the vehicle dynamics experienced in emergency scenarios irrespective of whether a road is dry, wet or snow covered. Our safe driving clinic is true, hands-on ‘drivers ed,’ not an exercise in learning how to parallel park a car.”

Features of the Street Driving Safety Clinic:

► Easy-to-remember car control techniques that aren’t taught in driver’s ed. classes
► Clinic includes practice time in a Lime Rock-provided vehicle on a low-traction surface (“skid pad”)
► Repetitive and substantial practice time to develop safe driving car control skills in a controlled environment
► Professional driving coaches that know how to maximum participant engagement in the learning process

The combination of easy-to-remember techniques, a lot of behind the wheel practice and engaging instructors yields improved critical decision-making abilities and ingrains skills that allow drivers to become comfortable with – and of most importance, aware of – the maximum capabilities of the vehicle being driven on a daily basis. Drivers leave the clinic considerably more prepared to handle situations that can cause loss of traction or requires emergency avoidance.
