New for 2017: The IMSA Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda comes to LRP
We sent one of our emissaries to Watkins Glen last weekend – thanks, Mitch! – to spy on IMSA’s all-new Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda championship.
The series’ Round Nine is here at Lime Rock July 22 during the IMSA Northeast Grand Prix weekend.
These very cool prototypes are called LMP3s; they look like 7/8s-scale WEC prototypes (the LMP1 Toyotas and Porsches that compete at Le Mans), have big and loud V8s, and are raced for the most part by up-and-coming drivers just itchin’ to make a name for themselves.
Mitch reported that the Prototype Challenge presented by Mazda competition was better than advertised. On Lime Rock's fast and furious 1.5-miles, it should be even better than that!
The series is a two-class field – the new LMP3s run with the original open-top “MPC” Elan DP02s – and at Lime Rock we’ll likely see a great grid of nine LMP3 cars and 15 MPCs take the green at 12:50 on Saturday, July 22, for the 45-minute Continental Tire Road Race Challenge.
This is a race you do not want to miss, Mitch says!
