Peter Greenfield Recieves Award At Sunday In The Park In Honor Of The Late Peter Giddings
At a quiet special moment during the prize giving during the Sunday in the Park Awards ceremony at the 37th running of the Lime Rock Historic Festival, Peter Greenfield of Freeport, NY, was presented with the Peter Giddings Honorarium Award to commemorate Gidding's many contributions to the success of the Lime Rock event.
Born in Eastbourne, England, but living in California for many years, Giddings (May 10, 1940 - Jan. 6, 2019) started racing cars in the ‘50s, won countless of races over the decade, and was well known in the historic racing circle.
Murray Smith, the Chairman of the Historic Festival at Lime Rock, said that Giddings had graced the Festival on many occasions with his superb cars from Alfa Romeo 8C 35 Grand Prix, Monzas and Maseratis, and of late his extraordinary Lancia D 50 Formula One Car.
The Giddings Trophy was crafted in the form of a Table Lamp appropriately engineered from parts of a prewar Alfa Romeo racing car and presented to Greenfield by Jeff Jacobsen, a long-time Historic Festival entrant.
Greenfield's spirited use of his prewar Alfas at the Festival together with his sheer speed in his Post War Formula Atlantic Ralt made him a more than worthy recipient of this first Giddings Trophy, Smith said.
"We hope to make this an annual Award at the Festival," he continued. "It should go to an entrant who, like Giddings, brings a special car, drives it skillfully on the track, cherishes it for its history in Motorsport, and explains that history to spectators young and old who perhaps are not as steeped in that history as Peter was."
