HVRHS Graduation At Lime Rock Park

On Sunday, June 21, the Housatonic Valley Regional High School (HVRHS) Class of 2020 held its graduation ceremony at Lime Rock Park. More than 100 cars lined the track's Front Straight and Pit Lane for this extra special occassion.

This "fast lane" commencement allowed each student and one of their guests to listen to the graduation speeches from their own vehicles -- a safety precaution in light of COVID-19. Each car was spaced out along the racetrack’s famous Front Straight and Pit Lane.

From the flagging stand at the Start/Finish Line, inspirational commencement messages fitting for the Class of 2020 was heard over the Park’s PA system. Speakers included:

  • State Representative Maria Horn,
  • Superintendent Dr. Pamela Vogel,
  • Principal Ian Strever, and three student speakers,
  • Lindsey Clark,
  • Brianna Webb, and
  • Jessy Haggard.
The school's principal then read the names of the graduates while the students remained in their cars. Cheers were accompanied by the honking of horns!

The ceremony closed with the class president reading the Oath of Athenian Youth followed by a processional as the cars drove off the track.

From there, the students drove around their school’s oval for a symbolic farewell as teachers and faculty stood on, waving goodbye to the graduates. Each student stopped at the school’s front steps to receive their diploma and have their photo taken.

All the staff at Lime Rock Park hopes the graduates and their families enjoyed the unique commencement experience!
