BLOG: Five Things To Watch For On Track at SpeedTour All-Star Race

Fans attending the SpeedTour All-Star Race at Lime Rock Park July 19-20 will have the rare opportunity to witness two all-star events featuring many of the legends of motorsports.

The weekend is highlighted by the star-studded SpeedTour All-Star Race, featuring an unprecedented gathering of motorsports icons with 19 legends paired with today’s Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli stars driving modern TA2 machinery in a 60-minute race for the chance to win $50,000.

In addition, the weekend boasts an IROC exhibition featuring original race cars from the International Race of Champions, put together by original IROC crewman Ray Evernham – who went on to have a Hall of Fame career as a NASCAR crew chief and car owner.

With so much action happening on track, let us be your guide on the top storylines of the weekend that you should be watching:

1. Mark Martin and IROC Out of Retirement: Mark Martin – popular NASCAR legend – will make a rare appearance behind the wheel, coming out of retirement to relive what he calls “the crown jewel” of his racing career with IROC. The weekend will mark the first IROC race in nearly 20 years! Martin led all drivers with five IROC titles and 13 victories. He scored 40 NASCAR victories prior to retiring from the sport following the 2013 season.

Martin will be reunited with the Dodge Avenger that he drove to the 2006 IROC championship for the three IROC exhibition races scheduled for Friday (July 19) and Saturday (July 20). Martin will join a cast of iconic IROC drivers that includes Ray Evernham, Greg Biffle, Geoff Brabham (two-time IROC race winner), Davy Jones, Bobby Labonte (three-time IROC race winner and 2001 IROC Series Champion),  Ken Schrader and Danny Sullivan (one IROC win). His car will also be part of the static display on Friday and Saturday located in Paddock A.

2. Legends and Rising Stars Clash for $50K in High-Stakes Showdown: The format for Saturday’s SpeedTour All-Star Race is unique. Combining legendary all-star drivers with today’s stars of the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series, the duos will team up in the TA2 spec racecars for a 60-minute race. The All-Star driver will qualify on Friday and then on Saturday they will start the race. A mandatory mid-race five-minute pit stop will allow for a driver change, an unprecedented move for the series, giving the wheel to today’s TA2 Series star. Drivers will not only be racing for a trophy, as a $50,000 winner-takes-all prize will also be on the line for the race-winning team.

CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 is a spec series (part of the Trans Am presented by Pirelli series) that uses Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers designed, built and tuned with only one thing in mind—performance. However, for some legends this will be the first time they will pilot a modern, purpose-built race car with powerplants restricted to just 530 horsepower, creating another layer of competitive intrigue. This blend of seasoned expertise and youthful exuberance, coupled with the unique dynamics of the race format, promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for both drivers and fans.

3. Trailblazers Unite: Mann and Ruman Team Up: With Lime Rock Park as an official regional hub for Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA), it’s appropriate to have two female stars driving together for the first time. Pippa Mann, a seven-time Indianapolis 500 competitor and Indy Lights winner, will co-drive with Amy Ruman, one of the most accomplished female drivers in American motorsports. Ruman is a two-time Trans Am champion, winning 13 races in addition to finishing in the top three in the standings seven times. While Ruman has ample experience taming the Bull Ring, Friday will be Mann’s first attempt on the classic Lime Rock course. This pairing promises a competitive edge and showcases the high caliber of talent of women in racing. It’s set to be an exciting challenge for both drivers as they bring their vast expertise to the track.

4. Additional Intriguing All-Star Pairings: There are many intriguing pairings in the SpeedTour All-Star Race. Local fan-favorite Boris Said will co-drive with his son Boris Jr. in Trans Am for the first time. The team is also one of the tallest on the grid with Boris senior looming over the field at 6 foot tall and his son at 5’9.

Andy Lally and Brent Crews are another interesting pairing with 33 years separating the drivers, the largest age gap of the teams. Crews, who is now 16-years-old, became the youngest winner and champion in TA2 history, scoring his first Trans Am win in his rookie season at just 14 years old, followed by clinching the TA2 championship in 2023 at 15 years old. Andy Lally brings a winning record to the All-Star race at Lime Rock Park, having secured victories in four races across three different sanctioning bodies. The 49-year-old Long Island native has notable wins at The Park, including the SRII class in 2001, the Grand-Am GT class in 2004 and the GTC class in 2019. Additionally, Lally has achieved podium finishes in various other classes at Lime Rock, including second in the LMP2 class in 2004 and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT class in 2016 and 2018.

Adam Andretti and his co-driver AJ Henriksen probably have the most on-track chemistry and history working together than any of the other teams. Andretti and Henriksen were former Trans Am teammates, both driving for ECC Motorsports for multiple seasons. This could possibly give them an edge over the other teams since they’ve not only worked together but also have experience wheeling TA2 machinery. Of his extended racing family, Adam Andretti has the most experience  at Lime Rock Park, finishing third in the Trans Am category during the Memorial Day weekend and capturing the pole position in 2014 and 2015. The Andretti family legacy at Lime Rock Park dates all the way back to 1963, when his uncle Mario Andretti won an ARDC Midget race following a battle with fellow future legend and Indy 500 winner Mark Donohue.

In addition, Former Winston Cup champ Bobby Labonte joins Thomas Merrill, who is the winningest modern TA2 driver at Lime Rock Park entered, plus former NASCAR driver and winner of this year’s Trans Am Memorial Day Classic feature Paul Menard joins regional star Adrian Wlostowski.
