Radical Cup North America Championships Will Come Down to the Wire
Radical Cup North America’s Platinum class will be decided at the season finale at Lime Rock Park, October 17-18. However, it isn’t just the high-horsepower SR10 championship which is yet to be determined. The fight also continues in Pro 1340 and in Pro 1500 for second and fourth in the championship. So, let’s take a look at how the points stack up, heading into the final three races.
Wayne Williams leads Louis Schriber in the Platinum by a mere 19 points. With 40 points for a win and 30 points for third, it would be game on if Schriber took top honors in race one and two with another Platinum driver between himself and Williams – in fact, Schriber would be one point ahead going into the final race of the year.
Given that this year we’ve seen podiums from Steve Jenks, Chip Romer and two of Schriber’s EVR teammates – Scott Wagner and David Alban – just to name a few, it’s more than conceivable. Furthermore, Williams is remarkably yet to clinch a win in the 15 races so far this season. And then there’s bonus points for pole and fastest laps, meaning Schriber could be five points ahead going into the final race should he gain all of those.
However, it’s not just Schriber who’s in with a shot. Steve Jenks has come off the back of two race wins in Atlanta, elevating him to third in the standings, just 10 points further back than Schriber. For the Group-A/Radical New York driver, continuing his winning ways are key and Jenks would preferably need Williams to finish third in all three races at Lime Rock, while he takes a clean sweep. Of course, if Williams was to finish off the podium just once, the script flips extremely quickly. However, to be to fair to the ONE Motorsports driver, the consistency he has displayed this year with ten podium finishes has been paramount in claiming and then retaining the points lead since Barber.
While Primal Racing’s Raiden Nicol has already wrapped up the Pro 1500 title with a perfect point score thus far, Valor’s Jack Yang is barely hanging onto second place. Graham Rahal Performance driver Spencer Schmidt has found his mojo in the last two rounds with four podiums, and two more fourth place finishes to be just 16 points behind. And while an uncharacteristic crash in Atlanta for Racing with Autism’s Austin Riley took him out of the fight for runner-up, he’s now fending off rookie and Cameron Racing / Radical Northwest driver Valen Venkatesh, who sits just 11 points behind the Canadian, for fourth in the championship.
Jack Yang has also consolidated his lead in the Gold 1500 title, for drivers over 30, with RYNO Racing’s Mike Anzaldi firmly in second and Primal’s Chris Huhn third.
The fight for the title in Pro 1340 is somewhat settled. Canadian Brady Clapham’s stellar year has seen wins at every venue except Laguna and includes a clean sweep in Atlanta to create what is essentially an insurmountable 157 point lead. However, things are less certain for the runner up position with Dermot Ennis 78 points clear of Graham Rahal Performance’s Kenny Naill. A mistake from Ennis would put Naill well and truly back in contention.
The four Class Champions, Second and Third Place Getters, three Teams Champions, Rookie of the Year and recipient of the coveted Jeff Green Memorial trophy will be celebrated at the Night of Champions Banquet at Spring Hill Vineyards following the final race at Lime Rock Park.
