From Pebble Beach to Lime Rock: The Del Monte Trophy Race Group Comes East

This Labor Day Weekend, a remarkable chapter of racing history makes its way from the pine-lined streets of Pebble Beach to the rolling hills of Lime Rock Park.

For the first time ever, the Del Monte Trophy Race Group—a fleet of historic cars that once raced the legendary public road circuit on the Monterey Peninsula—will compete at Historic Festival 43 against their East Coast counterparts. It’s a coast-to-coast celebration of American motorsport, and you’re invited to be part of it.

Legends on the Move

The original Del Monte Trophy Races ran from 1950 to 1956 on the scenic roads of Pebble Beach. These were the early, gritty days of American sports car racing, when hay bales lined the turns and speed was a mix of bravery and mechanical brilliance.

The first race was won by Phil Hill, who went on to become America’s first Formula 1 World Champion. The final race, in 1956, was won by a rising star named Carroll Shelby, driving a Ferrari 750 Monza. Before Cobras and Le Mans glory, Shelby was carving through the trees of the Monterey Peninsula. Now, that legacy rolls east.

West Coast Cars. East Coast Celebration.

Among the machines making the cross-country journey to Lime Rock Park:

· 1950 Johnny von Neumann MG Special

· 1952 Schaticoke (Streets) Manning Special

· 1953 Kurtis 500S Dodge

· 1953 Sorrell Kurtis GMC Special

Each is a living time capsule—restored, preserved, and ready to race once again.

“These are the cars that helped build the foundation of American road racing,” says Skip Barber, Historic Festival Event Chairman. “To have them at Lime Rock for the first time is something truly special. Our fans won’t just be watching history—they’ll hear it, smell it, and feel it as these cars take to the track.”
