Marking a Milestone at Lime Rock Park
via Greg Rickes
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the racing debut of Lime Rock Park’s “favorite son” Sam Posey. Sam’s first race was in a Volkswagen-powered Formula Vee at Lime Rock in the summer of 1964. It marked the start of a noteworthy career which included not only racing in the CanAm, TransAm, Formula 5000 and IMSA GT series but also appearances at endurance classics such as the 24 Hour races at Daytona and LeMans, victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and highest placed rookie in the 1972 Indianapolis 500, along with a distinctive media presence in both print and TV.
This milestone will be commemorated at this year’s New England Road Racing Championship at Lime Rock Park on June 15. The morning segment of the Formula Vee double-header will be the “Sam Posey Formula Vee Trophy Dash”. There will be special trophies and we also hope have Sam on hand for the awards presentation.
The FV race is race 7 on the schedule so it should take place as the last race of the morning, approximately in the 11:30 a.m -noon time range.
The afternoon race is a points-award round of the 2024 Northeast Formula Vee Organization Championship and will have the added title of the “Sam Posey Sprint”.
This year, 2024, also marks the 75th anniversary of the New England Region of the Sports Car Club of America. The NER connection goes with Lime Rock Park goes back to the first race ever held at the track in April 1957.
